aftermarket exhaust

:hmm Haven't seen a lot of exhaust mods to e55 in various forums. At first I'm just interested in getting a deeper growl out of the thing, then maybe more down the road with intake/ECU/pulley changes. Seems SuperSprint, Evo, Klemann, Eisenhaus, and Renntech are the choices. Several have recommended the Supersprint mufflers. Any input?

The only aftermarket one I've seen/heard in person is the Eisenmann one on Vic55's car. Sounded mean but he also has the secondary cats and perhaps primary cats removed. Someone that knows for sure will probably chime in.

You named all the major players. Understand up front that you will get ZERO power gains from any of them. In short, you lose as much grunt as you gain in sound.

To avoid that, I am actually playing with modifying the OEM exhaust.

The need for new headers is a nobrainer. You need to decide if you want shorties or longer ones. Shortys have the advantage of bolting right up and remaining emission legal. Long ones can add about 10hp over the shortys. I choose shortys.

There are primary and secondary cats that you may or may not choose to cut out.

Next is the resonator. I removed mine and love it. However, others have had good results from keeping the resonator and removing the secondary cats. In any case, you will always need to balance the system (backpressure is critical).

Last is the mufflers. You can either replace the OEM ones and add tips, or take the oem ones and have them gutted, which is what I am doing. Many tuning shops are going down this path.

My off the cuff remarks on the brands:
Eis Race (cat back). I think it is simply too much money for the quality and no gains. I'll take punched out AMG mufflers anyday.
Supersprint. WAAAY too pricey, even if it does include a header. Again, I am not interested in removing the cats. Retail is about $12k, but it can be had cheaper.
EVO is doing their own custom work on the OEM unit, and I'm not sure of the rest. Most of the tuners are only offering headers.

In my days of exhaust tuning, gains were made when we switched out(not removed) the cats with quality hi flow units. I think this makes sense to have them in an MB since the computers in these cars monitor everything. Headers are a given to increase HP. Mufflers alone only gain in dB and not HP.
i have the supersprint whole system and love it. it is longtube headers, resonators, high flowcats, and mufflers. my car has no cell issuses at all(no need to hack your ecu) it sounds nasty and gave me more HP then shortys. that was huge for me cuzz i am stickin with proven bolt on mods. so my Hp will be limited. i also wanted something different i hate havin the samething everyone else has. i have renn stage 1 + TB and supersprint system and i have 528rwhp and i belive 568tq (not sure) to me these numbers are great cuzz i started out with 401 rwhp i got a week car????
I didn't know the SS system didn't hack into the ECU. What happens to your O2 sensors?

what prompt response! Those are awesome wheels...if only they made them in D's!
I just opted to take out my resonators and put in borla race mufflers...alot of the people on this forum have heard my car...I was going for something to give me a lil more sound at the time and that is exactly what I got...I like it... :)

there is a place for it on the SS system. dont know all the details cuzz i didnt install, adam would know better. i just remember him callin me and tellin me the system was done and no cells poped up. but he had to extend the connectors due to the sensor is farther back
That makes sense. You will need to keep an eye on the O2 sensors. Since they do not have the cats to take all the heat, they will likely wear out faster. Not a big deal, but something to remember if the light pops on.

I thought you had ECU mapping done as well, no?

yes my ECU was done also. i just ment they didnt have to take the light off with the ECU.
Nice, I'm glad Adam took care of you. It is definitely more than i can say for Creative. It really is all about the relationship and trust. The shop simply has to understand that we spend a huge chunck of money on these cars AND happen to be very particular with how they are treated. Having a shop where you feel comfy leaving your car is key.

I had the post cats and the resonators out with that exhaust the sound was crazy but because I lost back pressure I lost some power too. I put the resonators back on and lost some down low noise but up top its the same and car is stronger than ever.
Tony extended the o2 sensors so that Renntech doesnt need to trick the ECU. Even though its an expensive unit, we didnt have to weld to fit and CEL wasnt never an issue.

Supersprint North America will be providing me demo long tube headers and rear mufflers for this weekend's meet.
Adam, how much for the ss complete exhaust system installed?
Might want to look into the AMG Headers they are NOT Cheap nor CARB Legal
But Im Sure that they are Built SOLID and will produce decent gains
I didn't know AMG made stainless steel tubular shorty/long tube headers. What else they got in their sleeve?

It depends on how MUCH you have to spend...

My last Visit to AMG I saw a W221 PULLMAN (Limo) with a S65 TT engine
and Maybach Brakes (Twin Caliper)...It was a freeking freight train..
Must have ran out of cash..it was Not a Armor Version...

A couple of Customer CLK DTMs and a GTR conv 1 of 5 in for More Mods....
