there was a thread in the mod section about the aforementioned thread already prior to all of this.
to be honest, I quickly looked at the page and read through what was going on and figured that it was going downhill so I closed the thread earlier tonight and left for a bit.
now, I'm reading it somewhat thoroughly so I can issue a response and/or see what action needs to be taken.
there's a fine line between what's offensive and what constitutes free speech and I believe that too much control can stifle free speech but too little can lead to personal attacks and fighting and then the line becomes severely blurred. I'm not going to go into legal standards, b/c it's an Internet message board for god sake, but rather my own standard which is usually the test for porn "I'll know it when I see it."
I'm not defending anyone, but I do think Rev made the distinction that Sean's personal attack was inappropriate and that he would let the discussion continue in the hopes of not inhibiting speech. How would you like it if someone said that they hope you and your family gets killed? Rev warned Sean and then as we all know unfortunately that posting PM's on MBWorld is a no-no and thus the ban resulted.
Jangy, I completely understand where you're coming from. If I was of Iranian descent I would be equally as angered--hell, some of the stereotypes angered me. I didn't know that there was a history between you and AMGDriven and I wish I would have known and just locked the thread before things got out of hand. His comments were not appropriate and should have been reprimanded.
I know I'm new, but I know and have been informed that before banning anyone, that they should be pre-warned (like Sean). Thus, I can't really ban AMGDriven, but I'm going to put AMGDriven On Probation, but unfortunately I feel that I may also need to do the same to you to be equally as fair due to the barrage of responses that you issued prior to the lock.
Please give me your thoughts.
