How much space does a simple text post really take up?

A long time ago I got into a hardcore postwhoring thread on an Impala forum and after 10k replies, the forum crashed for some reason. We argued that simple text doesn't take up much space and it there was an underlying issue, but we took the blame for it.

Does it make any sense or are they just uninformed?

Oh and pictures don't take up any space either since they are linked from an independant host (that forum didn't have attachments available).

Each post doesn't take up that much space. The MYSQL db file right now is less than 100kb so I can't imagine it could be that much. As soon as you start adding other factors into the equation it could grow but this is honestly my first forum that I've done from scratch so that question is best left for someone else at this time. ;)

I am planning to add the attachment feature soon so people can attach pics. That may take up some diskspace but hopefully "bossman" has enough space on his SAN to accommodate. :D

Yo,

Just bought the Etherdisk from LaCie 1TB. Nice product. It's already configured and attached to my server at the office. Let's the posting begins. :smt041
